The Receptionist Test – The Daily WTF

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

John was a lot less level-headed. His task should’ve been the simplest of all — the receptionist couldn’t print a document. Totally understandable when the printer is turned off and all of the lights on its display were totally dark. First, he hit Control+P, selected the printer, and clicked “OK,” and confirmed it wasn’t working. His solution? Hit Control+P harder to make sure the printer really felt it. For 20 minutes, he kept increasing the force of his typing and mouse clicks, finally pounding his fist on the desk and giving up.

  • A new paradigm in cognitive psychology | Encefalus – However, there is a serious objection. The mind has evolved in order to face the challenges of the natural world. By putting the subjects into an artifical environment we strip them out of this environment. This could be somewhat like trying to take a bear into a zoo and study it there, while ignoring the fact that bears live in forests.
Alan Kingstone and his colleagues propose that we need a paradigm shift in cognitive research. In this article (Cognitive Ethology: A new approach for studying human cognition) he defends his opinion that we need a new field called Cognitive Ethology. (see ethology in wikipedia)
  • Psychology Today: The Truth About Compatibility – Compatibility does not hinge on some personal inventory of traits. Compatibility isn't something you have. It's something you make. It's a process, one that you negotiate as you go along. Again and again. It's a disposition, an attitude, a willingness to work.
